Later that day Jill could not get Siri to create reminders or surf the web. It got to the point where we decided to write-off Siri and we used our new iPhones in the same manner we had always used cellphones ... manually.</span><br /><span style="background-color: transparent; font-family: Arial; font-size: 12pt; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;"></span><br /><span style="background-color: transparent; font-family: Arial; font-size: 12pt; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">On Friday, I read that Siri's issues were system wide. I treated that as a relief. At least it was not a problem with our phones or the local Sprint Network. Apparently Apple's servers were overloaded by the extreme high demand created by Siri's very popular feature. </span><br /><span style="background-color: transparent; font-family: Arial; font-size: 12pt; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;"></span><br /><span style="background-color: transparent; font-family: Arial; font-size: 12pt; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">In order for Siri to work, the iPhone must be connected to the network, either via cell tower or wifi. Then the network must communicate with a large database that houses all of Siri's considerable knowledge. The breakdown seems to be with the servers that host the database.</span><br /><span style="background-color: transparent; font-family: Arial; font-size: 12pt; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;"></span><br /><span style="background-color: transparent; font-family: Arial; font-size: 12pt; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">Apple has not yet mentioned a fix, other than a statement that they would increase server capacity. This morning I asked Siri to "search the web for problems with Siri". She did, and returned a Google list of articles written about her early missteps. The article said little more than what I just told you in the previous four paragraphs. When the app's compass is aligned with North, my iPod becomes a mini-planetarium. As I move the iPod around the sky it brings into view the location of stars, constellations, planets, a number of satellites, planets, the moon, and our sun. <br /><br />In this screen shot of my iPod, taken about 3 p.m. this afternoon, we see the Sun at the top of the picture. Beneath the Sun is Mars. The large planet is Jupiter. It is hard to see in front of Jupiter, but Venus is partially hidden by Mercury. The blue planet in the lower left is Uranus. Out of view but on a similar line is Neptune and below that the deplanetized Pluto. <br />&nbsp; <br />So if you have been counting I named seven planets all in a line. The Earth makes eight. Planet number nine is Saturn, which is lined up too but is way on the otherside of Earth and won't be visible in my hemisphere until Earth rotates and gives us a look at that part of the sky. <br /><br /><br /><br /><div style="border-bottom: medium none; The shore of the lake is lined with multi-million dollar houses (notice I did not say homes). Some of them are occupied, many are dark as daylight slips away. There is room for about 20 boats to anchor here. There were 10 boats in the lake when we arrived. This will be a brief one night stopover. We will not go ashore here. I won't even take our dinghy down from the davits. We had been there for nearly three months. We had a great time there in Marathon, but it was well past time to stretch Shibumi's sails. <br><br>The wind was out of the east. We were traveling east. Shibumi and the wind were opposing forces. I knew we had one day's worth of sloppy, bouncy sailing ahead of us before the line of Keys curved north and we could sail off the wind. The wind is expected to blow from the east for another week or more. If we waited for favorable conditions we might be there until April.<br><br>Monday night we anchor off of Rodriguez Key, a remote key near Key Largo. No one live on Rodriguez Key. In fact the Key is lined with mangroves which make all but impossible to land a dinghy on the island. It was very quiet and peaceful there. They traced it to a binding car on the furling line. It was an easy fix that I should have found myself. But it was so simple I didn't see it. I am glad they were already working on another boat in the area. It protects my mostly hairless head from sun, rain, wind, and the rubbing hands of admiring women. I have been under this crown in just about every weather condition you can name. Through all of that, this hat has never blown off of my head and into the water... until yesterday. Late in the afternoon, yesterday we dinghied ashore to buy fresh produce. The wind blew hard across the harbor during the trip in and the trip back to the boat. All the while, with the help of under-the-hatband straps, my lid stayed in place. Back at Shibumi, dinghy securely tied, groceries all handed up to Jill on deck, I climbed-up from the little boat to the mothership. Just then a wind gust caught the brim at a perfect angle and lifted my canvas cover away from me. In almost slow motion I watched my "sky" (as we called brims back in the day) luff into the breeze and land without ceremony, well behind Shibumi, in the sea. I was glad it was daylight. The 15 horse-power dinghy motor quickly chased-down my beloved hat. Ms-Gale is a sister-ship to Shibumi. Since our boats are very much alike we traded several maintence ideas. Slim and Gale told us many stories about their recent trip to the Western Caribbean. They also shared a Cuban fish recipe that they learned in the islands. The new pump is much quieter than the clunky old belt-driven one. And it is much more efficient, both with water and electricity than the 20 year-old relic that quit on us yesterday. This video gives a good overview of the Harbor. It does not show how well located the harbor is to the rest of the Keys, which is why we like it here. From Marathon, where this harbor is, we can easily access the upper and lower keys; either by boat or by rental car. Since we have been here we have gone to Key West (which is as far south as you can go and still be in the United States), <a href="http://royalld.blogspot.com/2010/12/finest-in-known-universe.html">No Name Key</a>, Big Pine Key, <a href="http://royalld.blogspot.com/2011/01/dolphin-research-center.html">Grassy Key</a>, Key Largo, and <a href="http://royalld.blogspot.com/2011/01/sunday-hangin-out-in-middle-keys.html">Islamarado</a>. We intend to stay hear until all of our tax information catches up with us via mail forwarding. Then, we will leave the harbor and see which way&nbsp;the wind blows. In this case the answer is "Yes. Yes I do... even with abandoned soap on the floor".<br><br>We are living aboard our boat, Shibumi, in Boot Key Harbor.<br>Shibumi has two showers onboard and carries 400 gallons of water. However, it doesn't take long to run through our water supply with two of us taking nice long showers; not to mention that I have to run Shibumi's engine or generator to get hot water.&nbsp;<br><br>The City of Marathon provides facilities for cruising boaters ... Wifi, mooring balls, dinghy dockage, hot showers and more.&nbsp;They do a good job of cleaning the showers. The water is generally hot and there is privacy. Although I have anti-fouling paint below the water-line, small marine organisms still attach themselves to the hull and have to be wiped/scraped off before they harden into barnacles. Strong storms are racing through Central Florida as I type this. We'll feel that frontal passage, here in the Keys, sometime after mid-night; but that's cool. Cliff and Cheryl brought us fresh fruits and veggies over the weekend. The music is playing and cork is out of the wine bottle. This afternoon, while listening to the VHF radio, I heard the marina turn away mooring ball requests; no moorings available. Vessels were told to try to find a place to anchor then sign-up for the waiting list to tie to a ball. Mooring balls are "considered" more secure than anchoring. There is a lot of room between boats in the mooring field. That is not always the case in the harbor's small anchorage where boats snug-in close to each other to claim precious space to swing on an anchor. We are particularly happy to be on a mooring with strong storms predicted for tomorrow night. I sleep better during a storm when Shibumi is tied to a reliable ball as opposed to swinging on anchor. I trust our anchor and have ridden-out some serious blows with it. But it is hard to trust everyone else's anchor in a very tight anchorage. I signed up to keep this ball until February 1st. By then all of our end of January mail should have caught up with us.
